Brits debat over onderzoek naar alternatieve geneeskunde
Plaats een reactieIn Nieuwsreflex (MC 11/2007: 452) werd melding gemaakt van de discussies over de werkzaamheid en effectiviteit van alternatieve geneeskunde in Medisch Contact en in British Medical Journal. In zowel de Engelse als de Nederlandse discussie lijkt de huidige wetenschappelijke stand van zaken met betrekking tot met name acupunctuur onbekend te zijn.
In Duitsland is de afgelopen jaren vanwege dezelfde discussie in opdracht van dertien zorgverzekeraars onderzoek verricht naar de efficacy, effectiveness en efficiency van acupunctuur.1-4 Hierin zijn de resultaten van drie miljoen acupunctuurbehandelingen geëvalueerd door het instituut voor sociale geneeskunde, epidemiologie en gezondheidskunde van de universiteiten van Berlijn. Uit de studie blijkt ondubbelzinnig dat acupunctuur werkzaam (effectiveness), veilig en kosten-bateneffectief (efficiency) is.
Specificiteit (efficacy) kon in het gerandomiseerd placebogecontroleerd deelonderzoek (gestandaardiseerde versus minimale acupunctuur) niet worden aangetoond. Het is sterk de vraag of dit soort onderzoek wel geschikt is om de specificiteit van acupunctuur aan te tonen. Een recent review in Pain over neuro imaging en acupunctuur suggereert duidelijk dat acupunctuur ook specifiek werkzaam is.5-8
Tevens zijn er inmiddels enkele Cochrane-reviews, die, op basis van minder recent onderzoek, tot positieve conclusies komen.9-11
